Why Africa?
I first travelled to Africa to celebrate my 30th birthday. I’ve travelled across the world but never experienced the magic that can happen when you get out of the hussle and bussle of daily life and get a chance to get really connected to the natural world around you.
To be honest on that first trip I went extensively to challenge myself. I signed up for a two week overland trip throughout Kenya and Tanzania travelling on an overland bus and camping out in the wilds. Now anyone that knows me would tell you that I appreciate the finer things in life (I’m a bit of a hairdryer girl) so camping was way out of my comfort zone. I think I had only been camping once before and that was as a Brownie!!. The prospect of pitching a tent every night and joining a group of people that I didn’t know was pretty scary, but I knew that if I was to grow I needed to step out of my comfort zone and as Susan Jeffers notes “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”.
Horses At Wild Routes of Kenya
It was an amazing experience and something shifted in me, I fell in love with the natural beauty of the place and the fabulous animals that we encountered in the Masai Mara and Serengeti. I was hooked.
In 2004 I returned and spent a fabulous month travelling overland from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. During this trip I discovered more about myself and begun to realise that I needed to take responsibility for my life if I was to lead the life that I wanted. It was during this trip that the first idea of taking a sabbatical from work arose and 12 months later I told my boss that I was taking a year out.
Luckily the company that I worked for encouraged sabbaticals and for me it could not have come at a more opportune time. I was virtually burnt out from being on the corporate hamster wheel, my health was suffering and my personal relationships were in tatters. I jumped ship for nearly a year and spent six months in Colorado rescuing horses and then six months in Africa being a tourist, volunteering at an elephant sanctuary and horse rescue.
To my amazement I discovered that I loved the simple life of living in the bush. There was something so liberating about all your possessions just being in a ruck sack. Freed from the materialism of life I found that I was freer than I had ever been in my life. I was fascinated by the beauty of the natural surroundings and the laws of nature. Everything had a role and purpose and collectively and symbiotically worked together to create an environment in perfect harmony. If only people could live like that.
My curiosity was aroused to learn more and so I enrolled in a two month programme to learn all I could about the African Bush.
Living in the bush I learnt all about the uses of the different plants and shrubs that surrounded us and how the Bush Men used different 
plants for different medicinal purposes. (This is what peeked my interest in Zoopharmacognosy and working with horses using natural self selection techniques). I learnt all about the animals – reptiles, mammals, birds – and how the different ecosystems worked. I was incredulous to see how everything was inter-connected and in perfect balance. You see nature is always in balance, and yet we struggle in our own lives to achieve this. At the end of the two months I took my examinations and became a level one qualified safari guide (not a lot of people know that!). And one of the reasons I did this was because I was woefully aware that I was going through life not being present and paying attention to what was happening around me. Trust me, being in the bush surrounded by wild animals means you really have to pay attention to what is going on, or else your safety could be compromised.

The Horses Who Will Be Our Teachers
Spend three days at the Wild Routes of Kenya Lodge where we will work with the amazing herd of horses to help empower you to become the natural leader you need to be to live your life with ease and grace.
Then you will spend four days exploring Africa on safari in Nakura National Park and the Masai Mara Reserve. Here you will see black and white rhino, elephants, giraffe, zebra, waterbucks, buffaloes, cheetahs and maybe even a leopard. You will get to see first hand how all the animals live in harmony and how a sense of community pervades this beautiful place. You will start to experience the natural laws of nature and how they work to keep everything in alignment.

Day 1 (26/6/13): arrival at Nairobi early in the morning, transfer to Subukia (3-hour drive with amazing scenery: Mount Longonot,
Lodges Where You Will Stay
Mount Kijabe, Lake Elementeita, Lake Naivasha, Menengai Carter…). Lunch and afternoon in Subukia: small lake, forest, colobus and blue monkeys, lots of birds. Visit of the farm with its domestic animals, visit of Subukia village, market, small shops, encounters with local people…). Dinner and night at Subukia Bandas.

Day 5: Safari all day in the Nakuru National Park (1-hour drive): black and white rhinos, Rotschild’s giraffes, zebras, gazelles, waterbucks, buffaloes, elands, baboons, vervets, flamingos and many other birds, lions, maybe leopards…Picnic on the top of a hill with beautiful views of the lake. Dinner and night at Subukia Bandas.
Day 6: Departure for the Maasai Mara after breakfast (6 and a half hour-drive). Stop in Narok for lunch, arrival at around 4.00 pm. First game drive in the reserve (lions, elephants, impalas, girafes, zebras, gazelles, wildbeests, hyenas, warthogs, cheetahs, maybe leopards…). Dinner and night at Mara Kima Camp.
Day 7: Safari all day in the Masai Mara reserve with lunch at the camp, dinner and night at Mara Kima Camp. Visit to an authentic Maasai village with our Maasai guide.
Day 8 (3/7/13): Departure for Nairobi (5 and a half hour-drive) after a last early morning game drive. Stop in Narok for lunch, arrival in Nairobi late afternoon. Transfer to the airport.

What is Included?
You are responsible for your own airfare, but airport transfers are included. Accommodation in shared rooms, with ensuite facilities, included in the price! We want to make it easy for you and have taken care of as much as possible. Once you arrive in Nairobi you will be picked up from the airport and transported to your Bandas in Subukia (about a 3 hour drive – but the scenery is amazing). From there all your meals are included including all the costs associated with our safari into the Masai Mara reserve. All you need to cover is your flights and spending money for the markets. Julia Felton is passionate about helping people connect to their inner power and find their own success through listening to horses and learning from them important lessons that can be applied to both business and life. An empathetic coach, Julia’s personal experience helps her understand the fear that can stop us acknowledging and appreciating the courage that is required to make change. In order to make a true connection with both horses, others and ourselves, it takes understanding, patience, trust, respect and openness. She is also an NLP Practitioner and Coach and describes herself as a student of life. Jackie Davis is one of a handful in the UK to have achieved the highest level of Horse Assisted Training. She is accredited through the Horse Dream Partner Training Programme and is a qualified member of the EAHAE (European Association of Horse Assisted Educators). As a certified Master Practitioner of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) she has run her own successful coaching practice specialising in Professional and Personal Development Programmes. She has now combined her skills enabling her to work with horses and clients offering clear-guided experiential learning in a unique environment.
Since qualifying as a Horse Dream Partner she has been driven by the power of quick behavioural change work that the horses evoke. Her vision is for this kind of learning to be used worldwide in all areas of progressive learning. She says, “From very early on in my training, I realised that to only work within one kind of market would not be enough for me. This work inspires you to think ‘outside the box’ and trust yourself to use your skills and experience in areas where they are needed, wherever that may be!” This decision has given her the flexibility to keep her work really varied and exciting. She has worked with a number of large corporate companies, small business clients and individuals running Experiential Days, Team Building and Clear Leadership Development Programmes. She has also enjoyed working alongside County Councils running workshops for teenagers.
